Not the series with Anthony Michael Hall.  That's crap.  The orignal movie, The Dead Zone, has Chrisopher Walken in it and it is absolutley amazing and you will jump out of your seat, believe me.  Stephen King struck gold with that one.  Great story.

If you can rent it, go for it.  You won't be sorry.

1. Poltergeist - needed therapy for years after watching it at 10 years old.
2. 1408 - Stephen King flick with John Cusack - very recent - went back to therapy after watching this
3. Session - one of the scariest movies that takes place in an abandoned psychiatric hospital, unfortunately, a lot of these people were already in therapy.
4. Japanese horror flicks (the grudge, the ring, ju'on, uzumaki, etc) - these people who write these movies need more therapy.
5. Evil Dead series, especially Evil Dead - Army of Darkness - great comedy horror - therapy session should include watching the The Army of Darkness then a discussion afterward.

If you have all these films in your movie collection... call and get help quick!

Don't get me started.  I cut my eye teeth on horror movies.  I have been a horror movie fan since grade school.  The first ones I can remember seeing at the Bay Theater in National City with my best friend, Linda, is The Creature from the Black Lagoon; The Tingler (Vincent Price), a classic; Thirteen Ghosts (the original in 3D); Blood Feast (preceeds the Night of the Living Dead), gory stuff; and many more.

Two really good ghost stories are The Legend of Hell House (1973) & The Haunting (the original with Julie Harris).  These don't have a lot of special effects.  They have just enough to send chills up your spine.  I would suggest not watching them by yourself at night.

I have the three Evil Dead movies and the original House of Was on VHS.  I remember seeing House at the movies as well.  It was really scary stuff at the time.  We were horrified when his mask got beat off showing his burned face.

One of my favorites are Salem's Lot with David Soul.

I've already got a lot of horror movies on VHS & DVD.  I check out the thrift shops and find a lot of old horror movies.  I just bought Dracula with Frank Langella.  He plays the sexiest one yet.

I drive my daughter crazy with the horror movies.  The most watched channel on my TV is SciFi.  Yes, I know I need therapy.  Love those scary movies!!!

Ah yes, The Tingler. When it debuted, they actually installed buzzers on some of the seats to freak the audience out at the end of the movie! Pretty corny by today's standards, but pretty clever too.

I'm with you, Linda. My most memorable movie experiences were at The Vogue Theater in Chula Vista. Remember Dr. Phibes and Dr. Phibes Rises Again? Those movies freaked me out when I was a kid. I must have seen all the Godzilla movies there, and that hokey snake movie SSSSSSsssss! with Dirk Benedict before the Battlestar Galactica days. Of course, who could forget Wicked Wicked that was filmed at the Hotel Del Coronado? It was filmed in split screen, and it sucked really bad. And the classic movie The Brain Eaters freaked me out too. My mom had a pair of black fuzzy house shoes that gave me nightmares for weeks.

I love all of the movies you all posted, but one of my favorite horror movies has got to be Carrie, with Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie and John Travolta. Brian De Palma did a fantastic job with that movie, and it still stands up to this day. Here's the original trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJe0iVo8y3A

Ridley Scott's Alien with Sigourney Weaver was a masterpiece. The creature designed by H.R. Geiger was brilliant. The posters were very intriguing... In Space, No One Can Hear You Scream. How cool is that?

John Carpenter's The Thing was absolutely awesome. It was faithfully based on the short story entitled Who Goes There? by John Campbell under the penname Don Stuart that was published in 1938. Way ahead of it's time! It was finally voted as one of the best science fiction novellas ever written by the Science Fiction Writers of America in the 1970's.

Gotta add Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street , The Lost Boys, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers to the list, even the remake with Donald Sutherland.

Ah, so many great horror movies, but so little time. Now you've got me wanting to dig some of them out and watch them again!

Not only was it an excellent movie, but it was an excellent novel. Great characters and great tragedy. Good twist on the whole psychometry thing. I like how Johnny Smith takes up a new hobby of shaking hands with politicians toward the end of the novel.

Ah yes, the Vogue.  We spent many hours there too before they turned it into the Paris Pussy Cat.  Dr. Phibes freaked me out.  Vincent Price made some pretty scary movies for that time.  They show them from time to time on the AMC or Turner channels.

Loved Godzilla reeking havoc on Japan.  I used to dream I could see him from my bedroom window.

Alien movies are good except for Alien 3.

Have you seen the Creeping Terror or Creeping Unknown?  It was one of the worst monster movies ever made.  Even worse than Plan Nine From Outer Space.  They lost the sound tract to the movie and narrated the movie all the way through.  It was about a giant shag rug looking thing going through the countryside eating people and getting bigger and bigger.  It was so bad, I couldn't believe I stayed up until 4:00 am watching it.

The Thing, I like both of them.  The earlier version left a lot for your imagination to work on.

Darkness Falls is a good, scary monster movie.  It kept me on the edge of my seat.

I could go on and on.

When a new horror or monster movie comes out, I'm the first one there to see it.

When he shakes hands with someone or touches them and gets the vision...oh man...that sharp violin sound makes me jump...every time!

Man oh MAN, now THIS is a TOUGH one by far! I'll go here, but I'm even questioning myself on these answers. My top five are (at the moment);

5) Poltergeist
4) The Hand (destroyed me when I was just a pup)
3) Nightmare on Elm Street
2) Friday the 13th
AND THE NUMBER ONE!
The Exorcist

What about:

1.  28 Days Later
2,  Jeepers Creepers I & II (totally scary)
3.  Blade I & II
4.  Silent Hill (really creepy) and one of the creepiest ever
5.  The Ring I   (Ring II as well).  I also watched the Japanese versions.  A lot gets lost in translation.

By the way, I have all of these on DVD or VHS.  Do I need therapy or what!

bellalaghoste

yes ring one good movie.  The hand?  who directed it?  Oliver Stone right?

Not a horror movie per say, but I saw, "The Day After" on tv.  I think I was about 14 or 15. That movie really had an impact on me.  I don't know if anyone remembers it.  It was about the day after a nuclear bomb hit.

Wow.  So I guess I wasn't the only one.  I still remember it to this day...and wished I could FORGET it. It was pretty scary for a made for tv movie, especially back in the early eighties.  :o

bellalaghoste

What about "Night of the Comet"?  I thought that was a pretty okay movie, for a zombie movie.

I just saw The Mummy 3.  It was okay.  The new Evie lacked something and Alex was too old.  Jet Li was awesome.  An okay movie.

Also saw The Lost Boys, The Tribe with Angus Sutherland, Keiffer's kid brother.  It was good pretty good.  A little too much blood and gore though.  I'm getting too old for that shit.

PPI Tim

You guys are forgetting one of the scariest movie ever.

PLAN NINE FROM OUTER SPACE!

I couldn't sit through all of it.
The thought of having to do so sends chills up my spine.
You won't be able to sleep.
AHHHHHH!!!!!
YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME! WATCH! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Sounds interesting...Go on.

Plan Nine!  I don't think anyone can sit through that one.  It's scary to think anyone would or could sit through it.  I think it's the second worst movie I've ever seen.  The Creeping Terror or The Creeping Unknown is the worst.
