I have always considered sleep paralysis as a possible factor.
This read about this case at an early age and it creeped me out.

I know I've had sleep paralysis a few times but never saw any creepy figures, thank goodness!  It's weird too, because you feel like you are awake at that time but thank goodness, I'm not!  It's an awful feeling!
