I've heard it's a fake  :o Just kidding bro, there's a great story about the Jersey Devil on a podcast that I found once. It was called "Hometown Tales" look it up and give it a listen my friend.

I just listened to the podcast, and watched the vidcast apparently there were a lot of sightings of The Jersey Devil in the early 1900's. Descriptions of the Devil were head of a horse, body of a man, wings of a bat, legs of a goat, and a tail of a serpent. pretty scary stuff.

OK - I know I'm a bit late in the reply and possibly no one will ever read or respond to this - but seeing as I was born and raised in Jersey and spent many a random night through high school hiding out in the Pine Barrens searching for the damn thing, I had to respond!  Jersey Devil - supposedly the 13th (of course) child of Mrs. Leeds who did not want another child (and apparantly for whom birth control and/or celibacy was not an option) She stated "Let this child be a devil!" It was born (on a dark and stormy night), ate all the other children of the household and flew up the chimney (in a decidely un-santa clause type of way)  It's been roaming the Pine Barrens ever since feeding on deer and small animals and the occasional misbehaving child/teenager.  It is supposed to have the head of a horse, batwings, goat legs, serpent tail , long claws and I've heard different theories on the body.  The most recent sighting I know of were in the 1970s and 1980s.  People swear they can hear it screeching or that they see it's red eyes at night.  One man (I think his name is Walter Leeds) swears he is a direct descendant of the devil but I don't know that he's ever really been able to prove it.

Thanks for your input. You really seem to know a lot about the jersey devil.

Happy to contribute! What can I say? It's my home state and I was always pretty curious about things. Growing up I tried to find out as much as I could about it - a group of us would even explore the Pine Barrens to find other explanations for peoples' claims. (ie. the devil's claw marks on trees - looked more like bear to us)
