Here's an interesting article I stumbled across recently. Granted it's a blog article, so take it with a grain of salt:

Can you say, "Poor construction, inadequate insulation, and an overactive imagination from being cooped up all winter long"? If we gave any validity to this line of deduction, then my house right now would be haunted as I, too, have serious cold spots in my house and see shadows everywhere. I also hear footsteps on my stairs more often then not.

Cold Spots in my house: Inadequate insulation under kitchen floor where there in 3' x 20' x 20' crawl space.

Shadows: Related to where the sun isand considering our house sits high above the valley including havinge windows everywhere and dark spaces with no windows at all, begins the creation of shadow people. Where you are in relation to the casting of shadows from the sun and a little logic always dispels ghostly shadow people here.

Footsteps on stairs: First, five people live in this house. Second, this house shrieks and creeks like a fun house due to the rapid building of these homes with green lumber and constant temperature change.

I find this case just a metter of cabin fever and an overactive imagination.
