I agree, it is very sad, but it makes sense. Once the diary fell from the burning wreckage it would slow down enough to reduce atmospheric friciton and fall to earth. I think it's very cool that the Israeli government preserved the diary and put it in a museum.

I think it's also amazing that after surviving the explosion it also survived sitting on the ground for weeks in soggy conditions.
