I just saw a great fireball over San Diego! It was at 1:23am, going West bound low in the Eastern sky (maybe 10-15 degrees.) Actually it went so low that I lost it behind the hills east of Poway. It has a blueish glow and trailing debris. Not sure if it was a meteor or space debris as it was traveling pretty slow. If anyone sees any news articles on it, please post it here.
Haven't found anything yet, Glenn, but I'll keep looking. Pretty cool, though.

Actually, fireballs are quite common. Meteors sometimes skip out of the atmosphere becuase their entry angle is too shallow. The American Meteor Society is logging all sightings via the internet. hello friends, just thought I'd hop in to see what was going on. Brian thank you for that website. I have been trying (half-heartdely to be honest) to find a site that kept track of things like this. I'd say about 12 years ago or so I was backpacking the John Muir Trail in the Kings Canyon area and one night directly above us through our mesh top tent my friend and I saw a huge fireball shoot across the sky. No one believed us the next morning and I have always wanted to reserach to see if there were any reports. It's probably much to late now since it was so long ago. It was an awesome experience and beautiful sight though.

It's good to hear from you! Yes, the AMS fireball log is fairly recent, but I'm not sure if there is an online archive of these events. Although fireballs are common, people rarely feel compelled to report them. I have been fortunate enough to witness several massive fireballs over the years that just crossed the sky from horizon to horizon, fragmenting and leaving a glowing train in their wake. Some fireballs are so bright they have been reported in the daytime, but I have never seen one during daylight hours.
