Title: Mind Over Matter by Loyd Aurbach, good read.
Post by: MichaelF (FPIE) on May 01, 2008, 01:03:53 PM
I know you guys really arn't into that touchy feely Sensitive stuff, but this is a pretty good book.  It's a pretty decent look at the unexplored powers of the mind from a scientific point of view.  I like it because it meshes with my mindset of where ESP and such come from, rather then a higher power.  Well not directly...

What's interesting is it also explains why so many psychics are "bad."  I don't like the term fraud or fake, because that to me means they KNOW they are not sensitive and are trying to run a scam.  I use the term "bad" because they are unable to determine the difference between what is a real sensitive experiance and their imagination.  They just spout out any old thing that pops into thier head, leading to many mistakes, then they get labled fake.  While in reality they may actually have some abilities.

The whole thing is really a catch 22.  In order for "mind power" (sensitives or whatever,) to work, you need to have confidence and faith that they will work.  If you doubt yourself, they wont work.  So many sensitives end up having so much faith in themselves, they refuse to accept that they could be wrong.  In same cases, this could lead to true abilities, but in many, it just makes them look like an idiot.  On the other side of the coin, you have people (like myself,) who had some interesting incidents with ESP and may have some abilities themselves.  Yet the fact that they "filter" what they see, knowing that some of it is imagination, they cast doubt on what could be a valid "vision."  This could actually limit their abilities.  It's kind of ironic that being actually responsible about it could hurt you.

It's kind of disheartening for me, because I am into exploring the powers of the mind from a scientific standpoint and am intrigued by developing whatever abilities I (or we all do) may have.  Yet simply because I wont run around spouting every experiance I have as fact, I may actually be limiting myself.

All in all thought, it's a great book.

Hey Mike,

Great post. Question for you:

Do you have any friends or acquaintances who claim to be a sensitive or psychic?

Sorta, my biggest problem is that being in the Military, the vast majority of people I know are in the Navy as well.  The Paranormal and being Psychic isn't exactly somthnig that you talk about, not unless you want to be ridiculed.  So no I don't have any "close" friends that are sensitive or psychic.  However, I did make some connections with some cool people up at GR08, and we keep in touch via e-mail and such.

I believe in sensitivity, mind power or whatever, but at the same time I am skeptical about it, if that makes any damn sense.  Part of me says that my own experiances are just coincidence and such, but then the logical side says the "odds" of such being a coincidence are too high.  But then again, I hate odds and statistics, because after all whats the odds of getting hit by lightning 3 times?

So in the end I'm stuck with thinking that such things exist and trying to prove them scientifically in some fashion, yet my very own skepticism can skew the results.

That's so true. You just don't get that shade of pink you think you'll get.
