I am new around here, so I just now read Karl's blog on the PPI myspace page concerning Alex the Parrot. I always thought Alex was an amazing case. There has been come controversy concerning whether or not the apes that have been taught sign language actually were communicating with language, or just mimicking gestures in response to stimulus. It was not only Alex's use of words, but how he used them to express and analyze complex, abstract concepts that made him unique, in the evidence concerning non-h.Sapiens linguistic ability.

The thing that blew me away, though, was his last words. "You be good. I love you. See you tomorrow." This strikes me as something an elderly grandfather might say to a young child, knowing full well this was his last day on Earth. I makes me wonder if perhaps Alex was aware of his impending demise. And if the Soul exists, Alex surely lives on in that form. And maybe, just maybe, he did stick around to see Irene the next day, one last time.
